Charity Overview

Every 45 minutes a man dies of prostate cancer - that’s more than 11,000 men every year. Prostate Cancer is the largest UK men's health charity, aiming to improve care and welfare of those affected by prostate cancer; to increase investment into research, and to raise public awareness.

Project Summary

Support from ICAP Charity Day is helping Prostate Cancer UK to improve their peer-to-peer support service which provides guidance and comfort to men with prostate cancer and their families. One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, and services like this are helping patients navigate their diagnosis.

"ICAP's funding has allowed us to make vital improvements to the service, ensuring that men with prostate cancer and their loved ones receive the support they need, when they need it, in a way that is right for them."

Prostate Cancer UK has been able to redefine and widen their matching criteria, allowing service users to be matched with volunteers beyond the treatment decision-making stage. Our funding has also allowed them to improve the service by conducting user involvement activities to better understand their experiences and needs, and to deliver training to upskill volunteers.

"The service is a lifeline. It enables those diagnosed to feel they are not completely alone. Until I spoke to a Prostate Cancer UK volunteer, I felt overwhelmed by it all."
"Service User"

ICAP Charity Day has also funded social media promotion, new print materials and crucially, running a hospital campaign in urology and oncology hospital departments. This has raised the awareness and visibility of this service to both potential service users and health professionals.
