Charity Overview

Founded in 2005, New Heights Youth is a sports-based youth development organization that combines basketball programs with educational and mentoring services that support college and career readiness, social emotional learning, and physical and mental health for young people who come from marginalized communities throughout New York City.

Having recently moved to a new headquarters in Brooklyn, New Heights is now widening its reach through new and expanded programs for the community. Through its full network of after-school, weekend and summer programs, New Heights engages more than 1,600 youth annually.

Project Summary

ICAP funding was used to support College Bound, New Heights’ signature program that helps underserved student-athletes rise to their potential on the basketball court, in the classroom and in their communities. Specifically, the program uses basketball to engage young people in a full range of educational services that promote high school graduation, college matriculation, college completion and career readiness.

New Heights is more than just a basketball program; it is a comprehensive experience that prepared me for future success, both on and off the court.

College Bound services include positive coaching, tutoring, SAT/test prep, a summer day camp, social emotional learning workshops, financial literacy training, high school guidance, college application assistance, campus visits, career exploration and other resources that are frequently out of reach for young people who struggle economically.

They helped prepare me for the real world by emphasizing character development and community involvement. Through workshops and activities, I learned important life skills such as leadership, time management, and resilience.

Whether on the court or in the classroom, College Bound coaches and educators are positive role models who guide young people through adolescence into young adulthood and motivate them to develop the social, emotional, behavioral and academic assets necessary for future success.

Over the past two decades, 100% of College Bound participants have been promoted to the next grade level in school, 100% of high school seniors graduated on time, 98% of them matriculated to higher education, and over 75% completed college. In addition, 95% of student-athletes obtain scholarship funds that allow them to graduate from college with less debt than their peers. In total, New Heights has secured over $70 million in scholarships and financial aid for College Bound student-athletes.
