National Literacy Trust

Charity Overview

The National Literacy Trust is the UK’s largest independent literacy charity, working for the past 25 years to transform lives through literacy.  NLT's mission is to ensure that disadvantaged children and young people in the UK have the literacy skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) needed for education and to lead successful lives.  They believe that literacy is a vital element of action against poverty that increases employability and earning potential.

In 2016/17 NLT directly supported the literacy of 108,198 children in 6,453 schools, focusing on areas with the highest rates of poverty and the lowest levels of literacy.
